Can I work only for 6 hrs and still be successful?

YES, but, but, but, you have to commit and focus.

If you ever note down how much of your time you are doing focussed work during the time you are working for your organization, you will be surprised or maybe even shocked.

If you remember and introspect speed at which you used to learn or revise your notes just before exams and your writing speed during exams, again you will be surprised or maybe even shocked. Because that was super-human speed.

Here are a few tips for focussed work:

  • Keep phone notifications off, or better keep your phone away.
  • Decide on 3 main tasks which you want to finish during the day.
  • Setup proper time in the calendar to finish those 3 tasks.
  • Keep pre-planned time in the calendar to check your phone, social media, or coffee.
  • Set up a time with your family when they can talk to you during working hours.
  • Move all your meetings to the start of the day or end of the day, so that you get a big slot of time to work as per your convenience. Better block that time in your calendar, so that your calendar shows you are busy.
  • Keep your party/travel plans for after 5 pm and even if there is no plan, still make an imaginative plan. This will create a sense of emergency in your mind to finish the work at hand.
  • Check emails maximum only twice, during start of day and end of day.

Key Ideas

Keep distractions away, pre-planning of things, sense of urgency.
